Mrs. Agnes Scott of Apple Valley donated this former District 17 schoolhouse to Dakota City it was moved here in the fall of 1988 with the financial aid of the Apple Valley Historical Society. It was built in the 1870s and located on the corner of County Road 42 and Cedar Avenue, where is served as a school until 1904. That year William Scott purchased the building for $35.00 and had it moved one mile to his farm using eight teams of horses. It was used as a granary for many years and later for storage and as a playhouse.
The building was restored by Dakota County Fair employees after placement in Dakota City. Using the outline on the front wall as a guide, the small entry room was replaced. It was dedicated in the summer of 1989 and was furnished to represent a 1900 land and law office. It contained early survey equipment, law books and maps.
The building is currently now a gift shop in the village.
