Education for 2012

School Visit Programs
April - June
Sept - Nov
Educational programs are available for elementary aged children, with tours designed to meet the
age and interests of the group attending. There are 4 programs.
1) Hands-On History (K - 2nd grade)
This is a 90-minute program touring 7 buildings with a costumed guide and doing
some hands-on activities. It may include:
- Helping with chores outside at the Harris House
- Gathering eggs and shopping at the General Store
- Touching blacksmith items
- Using writing slates in the School.
The program can accommodate up to six classes at one time (minimum 15 students).
The charge is $5.00 per person with no charge for one teacher and one
aide/para/chaperone per class. Additional adults are $5.00 each.
2) One-Room School House (2nd - 5th grade)
This 4-hour program, with a costumed guide and school marm, includes:
- two hours in the school, learning 1900-era lessons as they were taught in
rural one-room schools
- play an old-fashioned game outdoors (weather permitting)
- bring your own brown-bag lunch to eat at our picnic tables
- have a 90 minute tour through eight buildings in the village
The program is limited to two classes (minimum 20 students).
The charge is $5.00 per person with no charge for one teacher
and one aide/para/chaperone per class.
3) Village Experience (grades 3 and up)
This is a 2-hour program touring 9 buildings with a costumed guide and doing some
hands-on activities. It may include:
- touching blacksmith items
- writing on slates in the school
- withdrawing money at the bank
-shopping at the General Store.
The program can accommodate up to six classes at one time (minimum 15
students).
The cost is $5.00 per person with no charge for one teacher and
one aide/para/chaperone per class.
4) Homeschool tours are available - a combination of the above tours,
customized to your group's size and ages (age 3 and up), $5 per person.

1900 Teen Volunteer Camp
June 17 - 20 Hours 9:00am - 3:00pm
This camp is for 13 years old and up for those interested in volunteering at Dakota City
for the day camps, fair and other events. The teens will learn about being a
volunteer, proper dress for 1900s, how to help with the crafts and activities we do,
history of the buildings and people of the 1900s, etc. New this year, for an extra $25, is
the option to stay on Wednesday until 8:00pm for extra activities, including cooking
supper over a campfire. After successfully completing the camp, teens will be able to
help at the other apprentice camps, the county fair and our other events. Enrollment is
limited to 10 teens. They need to bring their own lunch and beverage each day. They
need to have their own transportation to the village, located at 4008 220th street west
Farmington, next to the county fairgrounds.
Cost: $125.00 per teen per session (4 days)
plus additional $25 if staying late on Wednesday

Summer Youth Camps: "1900 Apprentices"

July 15 -18
July 22 - 25
Three four-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be offered. Youth ages 6 - 12
can learn what life was like a century ago when they attend the camp, titled “1900
Apprentices”. Each camp will feature hands-on learning activities guided by
experienced history interpreters. Youths will participate in activities such as
household chores, crafts and entertainment, environmentalism, school and learning,
people and history, all from the early 1900s area. They will visit and learn about many
of the buildings in our village, and will have a chance to play many games that
children from the 1900s played.
Enrollment is limited to 20 youth in each four-day camp. The cost will be $125 per
youth with each attendee asked to bring a bag lunch and beverage each day.
They will also need to have their own transportation to the village which is located at
4008 220th Street West, Farmington, MN, next to the county fairgrounds.
Registration deadline is June 10.

Summer in the Village
June - August
This program is designed to give the daycare centers, home daycare groups, YMCA
groups, etc, the experience of what life would have been like for them 100 years ago.
There are several hands-on experiences that will help them expand their
understanding and appreciation of the past in an exciting and memorable way.
Typical activities may include looking through stereoscopes, helping with laundry,
and making a project to take home!
There is a $5.00 per person charge for this two-hour program.
