Come spend an autumn day in the village and experience what a day in 1900 would have offered. Join in on the fun building a scarecrow, shell corn, grind corn into flour, play games and create activities from autumn items, make rope, visit animals, learn Morse Code, make corn husk/rag dolls. Watch demonstration in the carpenter, blacksmith, print shop and Harris House cooking. The popular Dakota City Medallion Hunt will be held again. A cash prize of $100.00 will be awarded to the person finding the medallion.
A pumpkin carving contest is being held where you carve your pumpkins at home and bring to Dakota City Wednesday, October 16th or Thursday the 17th. Judging will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday. See below for the rules and registration form.
Drop off your already carved pumpkin at Ahlberg Hall in Dakota City during the following times:
Wednesday, October 16 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, October 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Judging will take place on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00pm.
You can fill out a registration form when dropping off your pumpkin.
Volunteers will help guests build a small scarecrow. Guests are asked to bring along old child’s clothing to be used to build a Scarecrow. Best articles of clothing to use is long pants and a long sleeved shirt or top. Also all in one outfit with long legs and sleeves works well. Also a hat or cap may be desired. The event will provide stuffing, straw, and twine. What will your scarecrow look like?
Ride the trolley to the field and pick an ear of corn. Back in the village you will then be able to shell and grind an ear of corn. You can take the corn meal into the Harris House to be made into corn bread.
Play games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Fish for Apples, Checkers, Stilts, Hoops and Sticks.
Visit live goats and mini bovine from Monica Vanderborght’s farm in Cannon Falls.
Clues will begin at 10:00am on Friday, October 18th. Clues will be posted on Facebook (“like” Dakota City to see the clues) and at the kiosk sign by the General Store. A new clue will be posted every two hours until the medallion is found. Basic rules for finding the medallion: the medallion will not be underground, inside buildings or any higher than five feet. You can only search during our event hours. If the medallion is not found on Friday the hunt will continue on Saturday. Check Facebook or call the office to see if the medallion has been found on Friday. You can come back on Saturday to hunt for the medallion if you have your wristband stamped from Friday.
Trace leaves, do potato stamping, make a corn husk/rag doll, do rope making, milk the fake cow are some of the activities that you can do through out the village.
Learn to square dance on Saturday at 10:30am and 2:00pm in Ahlberg Hall museum.
On Saturday, see vintage fire trucks and fire-fighting equipment from 1900 in the fire barn.
On Saturday, the Book Buggie will be on the grounds giving out one free book per child that wants one.
Available for purchase during Autumn Harvest in the Village will be hot food, beverages, ice cream and more.
